People searching for stomach parasites in Thailand are usually referring to parasites that affect the digestive system. Medically, that description is not completely accurate because many parasites live mainly in the intestine, while others affect the liver or bile ducts rather than the stomach itself.

For travellers, the most relevant exposures include contaminated food or water, raw or undercooked freshwater fish and contact with contaminated soil. Some infections cause obvious diarrhoea within days or weeks. Others can remain almost unnoticed for years.

Thailand's own disease surveillance continues to detect intestinal parasites. In July 2026, the Department of Disease Control reported confirmed infections including the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, hookworm, small intestinal flukes, Giardia and other protozoa during follow-up testing associated with a liver-fluke screening programme.

That does not mean that the average tourist has a high probability of acquiring all of these infections. Risk varies enormously according to food, water, sanitation, location, activities and length of stay.

1. Giardia: a classic cause of persistent traveller's diarrhoea

Giardia duodenalis, also called Giardia lamblia, is a microscopic intestinal parasite transmitted when someone swallows the organism through contaminated water, food, surfaces or faecal contamination.

CDC identifies giardiasis as one of the more common parasitic infections acquired by international travellers and describes Giardia as the most common parasitic cause of travellers' diarrhoea.

Typical symptoms include:

  • diarrhoea
  • gas
  • abdominal cramps
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • dehydration
  • unusually foul-smelling or greasy stools that may float

Symptoms commonly begin around one to two weeks after infection and can continue for several weeks.
