Mosquitoes are present in Thailand throughout the year. There is no completely mosquito-free season, although numbers and the risk of some mosquito-borne diseases generally increase during wetter periods when standing water provides more breeding sites.

For much of Thailand, the main rainy season runs from around mid-May to mid-October. Dengue transmission commonly rises during this period, with Thailand's Department of Disease Control describing a typical increase from April and a peak between June and August. Southern Thailand has a different rainfall pattern, so mosquito conditions there do not follow exactly the same calendar.

For travellers and residents, the practical message is simple: use mosquito protection year-round and take extra care during and after periods of heavy rain. Protection is important during the daytime as well as at night because the mosquitoes that spread dengue are primarily daytime biters.

When is mosquito season in Thailand?

If by mosquito season you mean the period when mosquitoes are generally more noticeable and dengue risk tends to increase, the broad answer is the rainy season, particularly from around May to October in much of Thailand.

The Thai Meteorological Department describes the country's main rainy season as beginning around mid-May and continuing until approximately mid-October. Rainfall is usually particularly heavy in upper Thailand during August and September.

Thailand's Department of Disease Control reports a similar seasonal pattern for dengue. Dengue cases generally begin increasing around April, peak during June to August and start declining around September.

That does not mean mosquitoes disappear in November or that dengue cannot occur during Thailand's dry season. CDC states that dengue is endemic throughout Thailand and cases are reported year-round, including outside major epidemic years.

A better way to think about mosquito risk in Thailand is therefore:

  • mosquitoes can be present all year;
  • rainy weather usually creates more favourable breeding conditions;
  • dengue transmission typically increases during the rainy season;
  • regional rainfall patterns mean the peak period is not identical everywhere;
  • different mosquito species and mosquito-borne diseases have different patterns.

Why are there more mosquitoes during the rainy season?

Mosquitoes need suitable places to lay eggs and develop. Rain creates or replenishes small collections of standing water around homes, hotels, gardens, construction sites and outdoor areas.

The Aedes mosquitoes responsible for most dengue transmission can breed in surprisingly small water containers. Thailand's Department of Disease Control lists places such as plant-pot saucers, vases, tyres and other containers that retain water as potential breeding sites.

Temperature and humidity also affect mosquito survival and reproduction. WHO notes that rainfall, temperature and humidity are among the factors that influence dengue mosquito populations and transmission.

Heavy rain itself does not guarantee that every location will suddenly have large numbers of mosquitoes. Local drainage, water storage, mosquito-control measures and the availability of breeding containers all influence the actual situation around a particular building or neighbourhood.

Is mosquito season the same across Thailand?

Bangkok and central Thailand

The risk of Japanese encephalitis for an individual traveller depends strongly on itinerary, length of stay and activities. Short stays in urban areas do not carry the same risk as prolonged time in rural or agricultural environments.

Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman coast

The Andaman side of southern Thailand, including destinations such as Phuket and Krabi, receives substantial rainfall during the southwest monsoon. Mosquito populations can therefore remain noticeable through much of the wetter part of the year.

Dengue prevention remains relevant in tourist areas as well as residential neighbourhoods. Resort accommodation does not guarantee freedom from mosquitoes, particularly around gardens, balconies and outdoor areas.

Koh Samui and the Gulf coast

Southern Thailand does not have one uniform rainy season. The Thai Meteorological Department notes that southern Thailand can remain rainy after upper Thailand enters its drier season, with particularly heavy rainfall on the southern east coast later in the year and rain potentially continuing into December.

This is why visitors to Gulf destinations should not assume that November or December automatically means dry conditions or very low mosquito activity.

Are mosquitoes in Thailand active during the day or night?

Both, depending on the species.

This is particularly important because many travellers associate mosquitoes only with evenings.

Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dengue, chikungunya and Zika, are primarily active during the day. Thailand's Department of Disease Control states that Aedes mosquitoes can bite throughout daylight hours, with substantial activity after sunrise.

WHO notes that dengue mosquitoes are active during the day, with biting often particularly noticeable in the early morning and late afternoon.

Other mosquitoes have different patterns. Anopheles mosquitoes, which can transmit malaria, typically bite from evening through the night.

The safest approach in Thailand is therefore not to restrict repellent use to dinner time. Protection may be appropriate from morning through evening when mosquitoes are present.

What mosquito-borne diseases occur in Thailand?

Most mosquito bites cause only temporary itching and irritation. However, several mosquito-borne infections occur in Thailand, which is why preventing bites has a medical purpose beyond avoiding discomfort.

Dengue

Dengue is endemic throughout Thailand and is the mosquito-borne illness most relevant to many travellers and residents.

It is transmitted mainly by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Cases occur throughout the year, but transmission typically peaks during the rainy season.

Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea and rash. Some infections progress to severe dengue.

Chikungunya

Chikungunya has also been transmitted locally in Thailand. The same Aedes mosquito species involved in dengue transmission can spread chikungunya.

Typical symptoms include fever and prominent joint pain. Travellers should use the same daytime mosquito precautions used to reduce dengue risk.

Zika

Zika transmission occurs in Thailand. Many infections cause no symptoms or only mild illness, but infection during pregnancy is particularly important because Zika can cause serious fetal complications.

People who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or whose partner is pregnant should review current travel-health guidance before travel because recommendations can change.

Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis is endemic in many parts of Thailand outside Bangkok. CDC describes transmission as year-round with seasonal peaks from May to October, particularly in northern Thailand.

Risk is generally associated more strongly with prolonged stays, rural areas and exposure around agricultural environments than with ordinary short urban holidays. Vaccination may be recommended or considered depending on itinerary and duration.

Malaria

Malaria is present in specific parts of Thailand rather than being evenly distributed across the country.

CDC identifies the principal risk areas as rural and forested regions near parts of the borders with Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia, together with some other designated areas. Transmission can occur year-round and CDC describes a peak during the rainy season.

Malaria tablets are therefore based on where you are travelling, not simply whether it is mosquito season. Someone staying in Bangkok or a major beach destination may receive different advice from someone trekking or working in a forested border province.

How to prevent mosquito bites in Thailand

You cannot eliminate all mosquito exposure, but several measures substantially reduce it.

Use an effective mosquito repellent

CDC recommends repellents containing established active ingredients such as:

  • DEET;
  • picaridin, also known as icaridin;
  • IR3535;
  • oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD where age-appropriate;
  • 2-undecanone.

Follow the instructions on the product rather than applying more than recommended. When sunscreen is also needed, CDC advises applying sunscreen first and insect repellent afterwards.

Repellent is particularly useful during daytime outdoor activities because Aedes mosquitoes do not wait until sunset to bite.

Cover exposed skin when practical

Long trousers, long sleeves and socks can reduce the amount of exposed skin, particularly during hiking, outdoor evenings or stays in areas with heavy mosquito activity.

CDC also recommends clothing and outdoor equipment treated with permethrin. Permethrin-treated products should be used according to their instructions and permethrin intended for clothing should not be applied directly to skin.

Choose accommodation with screens or air conditioning

Air-conditioned rooms and properly screened doors and windows can reduce mosquito exposure indoors.

A mosquito net can be useful when sleeping somewhere that is open to the outside or does not have adequate screens.

Remember that dengue mosquitoes can be active indoors during the day, so closing doors and using screens is relevant even if you are not concerned about nighttime bites.

Remove standing water around your home or accommodation

Long-term residents can reduce mosquito breeding around their immediate environment.

Check for water collecting in:

  • plant-pot trays;
  • buckets;
  • uncovered containers;
  • discarded bottles or cans;
  • old tyres;
  • decorative water containers;
  • blocked drains and gutters;
  • other objects that hold rainwater.

Thailand's Department of Disease Control recommends regularly removing or covering potential water containers to reduce Aedes breeding sites.

If you live in a condominium or serviced apartment, mosquito breeding may occur elsewhere on the property, so building-level pest and water management can also matter.

Are mosquitoes worse after heavy rain?

They can be, although the relationship is not immediate or identical after every storm.

Rain creates breeding sites, and warm temperatures allow mosquito larvae to develop. Mosquito numbers can therefore increase after wet periods when water remains standing.

Very heavy rainfall can temporarily flush some breeding sites, while subsequent pools and containers may provide new places for mosquitoes to reproduce. Local conditions are more important than whether it rained on one particular day.

What if you develop fever after mosquito bites in Thailand?

Most people bitten by mosquitoes do not develop a mosquito-borne disease. The number or size of bites does not tell you whether you have dengue, malaria or another infection.

Arrange medical assessment if you develop a significant unexplained fever during or after travel in Thailand, particularly if it occurs with symptoms such as severe headache, marked muscle or joint pain, rash or unusual weakness. Tell the clinician where in Thailand you have been and about any rural or forest exposure.

Seek prompt medical care for warning symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, marked drowsiness, difficulty breathing or significant deterioration.

If dengue is possible, WHO advises avoiding aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen because of bleeding risk. Paracetamol is generally used for fever and pain, but follow the advice of the healthcare professional evaluating you.

When is the worst time for mosquitoes in Thailand?
